Most recently Toni was the Principal Investigator on an NSF grant that aimed to identify the most important design attributes for engaging girls at STEM exhibits (Exhibit Designs for Girls’ Engagement – EDGE). In close collaboration with informal learning practitioners, Toni uses her developmental psychology background to identify research designs and methods that address questions about broadening participation and the effects of exhibit characteristics on visitors’ exhibit engagement, conversations, and skills practice. Prior studies have explored the impact of immersive exhibit designs on visitors’ spatial reasoning, and investigated label designs for enhancing reflection and metacognition.
